Advocacy Initiatives

The Turn Down the Sound campaign encourages the lawmakers and the general public to support initiatives that will reduce excessive noise and mitigate the public health problems that noise creates.  Below are details of pending legislation and ways you can get involved.

Illinois House Bill HB2402:  Reducing Motorcycle and Siren Noise

Illinois State Representative Christian Mitchell introduced legislation in February 2017 to reduce the volume of emergency vehicle sirens and calls for the impoundment of motorcycles with illegal exhausts after a third violation. This bill would:

  • Limit the amount of noise a motorcycle can make while driving on our streets.

  • Fine motorcyclists who disregard the noise limit

  • Impound a motorcycle if the driver repeatedly violates the noise limit.

  • Regulate the intensity of sirens while ensuring emergency vehicles are still able to do their jobs safely

Illinois House Bill HB2361:  Monitoring Noise on Lake Shore Drive

House Bill 2361 was introduced by Illinois State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz and would allow the City of Chicago to enact an ordinance providing for a noise monitoring system upon any portion of Lake Shore Drive. The noise monitoring system would be capable of recording noise levels 24 hours per day and would be equipped with computer software capable of processing the data. The noise monitoring system would be similar in concept to the monitoring system used to measure jet noise around O'Hare International Airport
